Re-defining summer
fun:
I don’t know about
you but May is setting up to be a busy month. May is that cross-over
month that brings us the end of another school year, graduations,
and a transition into summer season. Vacation season explodes as
people rush to the beach, mountains, anywhere but where they are
now! We’ve all done it of course, the annual rut-busting, gas
guzzling, race out of town. Well, gas prices may be putting a damper
on some of that travel and some may well find them selves staying
here on the shore.
For those who might
be hanging around this summer or find they have a little extra time
on their hands, I’d like to suggest something a little out of the
ordinary. I’d like to suggest you get involved in your local
community. Perhaps volunteer with one of the many local
organizations who serve the community…perhaps a beach clean-up with
the kids or other environmental event. I’m sure there are any number
of opportunities that entail fresh air, sunshine and some relatively
easy work that can actually be fun and rewarding.
While I fully
expect to hear a few say, give me a break, I throw it out there as
an option. Here at PAC 14 we come in contact with any number of
local non-profit organizations who work hard to develop activities
for and around people - young people – education – and earth
friendly activities. What I’ll offer next might really get a - give
me a break reaction as well - what about considering PAC 14? Our
service is non-profit, our services are all free, and provide some
level of creative outlet.
There is a great
deal of history here on Delmarva, which could make for an
interesting project for the family. What about a video field trip?
Dad and Mom help with the camera, which we provide, the kids act as
TV hosts, interviewing a local person of interest…or tell the story
of some famous place or event. Maybe talk about the Bay, our
waterways, pollution, and how people can be more protective of our
natural environment.
What about the
folks over 18, generation X folks, adults who might find their
schedules a bit more open in the summer…ever thought about taking up
the challenge of producing a mini-documentary about something that
might educate, entertain or inform the community? Perhaps an
informational video about biking, painting, gardening, anything you
could share with our viewers as a community service. Keep in mind
some of our neighbors are shut-ins, maybe in poor health, or for
whatever reason might not be able to travel easily to enjoy the
sights and sounds we take for granted.
I suppose you get
the idea. It’s a long shot I know. Summer is a time for family and
travel and hopefully at least one good week of downtime. But, it’s a
big world out there; perhaps a few of you might be un-attached and
free to do as you wish. Perhaps you’re retired and want to challenge
yourself with something new. If you fit any of these categories and
have the time and interest, I highly recommend reaching out to our
area non-profit orgs and see what you might do to help. If PAC 14
happened to be the non-profit organization you wish to work with, we
certainly embrace the volunteer spirit.
Either way…enjoy
May…enjoy those high school and college graduations...and enjoy all
the benefits of our wonderful Eastern Shore - safely.
Special holiday:
Memorial Day 2008 -
Originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those
who have died in our nation's service.
